What better way to begin our 2021 season than with a double dose of Mozart, exploring the full breadth of his musical personality? Recently married and enjoying the generous hospitality of the Count of Thun and Hohenstein in Linz, Mozart composed his Symphony No. 36 “at breakneck speed” in less than four days. Superbly balancing qualities of nobility and festiveness, the symphony’s reputation was quickly consolidated by subsequent performances in Vienna and Salzburg.

Renowned for its deeply expressive slow movement, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major is a favourite of many. Warmly lyrical throughout, this concerto evokes the spirit and emotional depth of Mozart’s operas, and the soloist engages in a constant dialogue with the orchestra. Our soloist Michelle Cheung is a versatile and highly talented musician who has enjoyed a long association with the KPO.

Dumbarton Oaks is inspired by the Baroque concerto grosso. Referencing works such as Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, Stravinsky treats the concerto form not so much as a dialogue, but as a playful contest between a group of soloists and the larger ensemble. This short and finely crafted work displays the transparent textures and catchy rhythms so characteristic of Stravinsky’s style in the 1920s and 30s.

Sydney composer Naomi Dodd was a recent participant in the KPO’s Composer Workshop program, and we are proud to be performing a newly commissioned work by her in our opening program for the year.
