This exhibition by Karen Benton includes artworks which reflect her interests in extracting and abstracting elements from the urban environment.

Benton paints and manipulates materials to create dialogue between colour, surface, line and space. By resisting a single style, paintings of minimal shapes and gestural lines coexist with screenprints, digital media and textiles to produce provocative compositions which abstract and reinterpret the visible in the everyday. For the past 15 years she has been focused on painting and abstracting the essence of the urban landscape as she experiences the textured, layered surfaces and line markings of both the calm open spaces and the chaos of city living.

Sometimes blurring the lines between painting and sculpture, her work frequently plays on art historical references. Concepts, compositions and processes continue to develop as Benton considers the complexities of abstraction by questioning and experimenting with the medium. Her practice continues to evolve as she explores the dissolution of the space in between the often encountered dualisms absence/presence and conceal/reveal.
