The Australia Piano Quartet has been Ensemble in Residence at the University of Technology Sydney since 2012. Its members are accomplished musicians who perform with finesse, subtlety and insight. They have a busy schedule with a concert series presented by the Sydney Opera House and Melbourne Recital Centre, plus performances in Europe and Asia. They have commissioned over 20 new piano quartets from Australian composers and will shortly release their recording of Mozart’s works for piano quartet.

In this concert quartet members Daniel de Borah (piano), Thomas Rann (‘cello) and James Wannan (viola) will be joined by guest violinist Andrew Haveron.

Their first work is an 18th century arrangement of Mozart’s K452 quintet for piano and winds that captures the delight and élan of the original work. Mozart’s K478 quartet is an early masterpiece of the piano quartet repertoire that soars with delicate beauty and rich orchestral-like tones and textures. Their final work is from Schumann, who like Mozart, creates the impossible – music that is both elegantly nuanced and breathtakingly exhilarating.

Mozart Piano quartet in E-flat, K 452 (after quintet for piano and winds)

Mozart Piano quartet no 1 in G minor, K 478

Schumann Piano quartet in E-flat, op 47

Sydney Mozart Society is a not-for-profit group dedicated to promoting the music of Mozart and other great classical composers and to providing Sydney audiences with world-class performances by leading chamber musicians.
