The NSSO first started performing in 1947. Set up by Dr Alan Bellhouse, for a long time it was the only orchestra regularly performing on Sydney’s North Shore. As we look back over 70 years of NSSO history, we look to the future in this epic final concert for our Anniversary season.

A spectacular musical experience brought to life in the marvellous acoustics of the Concourse Concert Hall. The spine-tingling opening notes of Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra will be known to all – perhaps most famously from the Kubrick movie ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’.

John Williams has written some of the most iconic and exciting contemporary film music. His most famous work is, of course, the music from the ‘Star Wars’ movies, and the Star Wars Suite brings together some of the best known and wonderful music from the movies.

Dvořák’s 9th Symphony ‘from the New World’ is one of the best-loved symphonies in the repertoire. Written as a response to the musical influences Dvořák absorbed whilst in America, it contains many famous themes and lush orchestration. And did you know that a recording of this work was taken to the moon on Apollo 11 by Neil Armstrong?

We are also delighted to feature a new composition, commissioned by the NSSO from Sydney composer Thomas McConochie for the occasion of our 70th Anniversary, entitled Starry Night Over Ubud.

This promises to be a fabulous concert by one of Sydney’s leading community orchestras. Buy your tickets today!
